The story so farOn paper, it seems that the Netherlands cruised through Group A as they picked up seven points in an unbeaten run, but they have not quite shown their best yet. Luckily for Van Gaal, Cody Gakpo has been a shining light and is perhaps the player of the tournament so far. He opened the scoring with three valuable goals in all of their group games, against Senegal, Ecuador and Qatar. The first contributed to a rather late 2-0 win against the African champions, the second came inside six minutes against Ecuador and the third part of a routine victory against the World Cup hosts. USA, on the other hand, managed to escape the toughest group (according to the FIFA rankings). A slightly disappointing 1-1 draw with Wales was followed up by an excellent team performance against group winners and highly-fancied England.
The only other time they have reached the last eight was then they finished third at the first ever World Cup, almost 100 years ago in 1930. The Netherlands are no strangers to the latter stages of the World Cup. In their history, they have reached the final on three occasions but have never lifted the famous trophy. In total, they have reached the quarter-final six times and will be confident of doing the same again in Qatar. Christian Pulisic was injured in the process of scoring the winning goal against Iran but he should still start after it was revealed his fitness was still being monitored ‘day-to-day’.
